Staying safe in busy spaces |

Dear Resident,
With Christmas just around the corner (perhaps sooner than we'd like!), many of us will be carrying more cash, gifts and other valuables while shopping and travelling. Unfortunately, thieves often take advantage of this busy time of year and target people who may be distracted or carrying high-value items.
Please take a moment to read the advice below to help keep yourself and your belongings safe when out and about.
Stay alert and aware of your surroundings Avoid wearing headphones or becoming distracted by your mobile phone, particularly when walking alone. Use confident body language Criminals often target people they perceive to be vulnerable. Walk confidently with your head up, stay aware of what is happening around you, and make eye contact where appropriate. Use busy, well-lit routes Avoid isolated or poorly lit areas whenever possible. If you can, travel with others and choose routes that are busy and covered by CCTV. Be mindful of potential hiding places such as doorways, bushes and parked vehicles. Vary your routine Criminals can observe regular routes and patterns. Changing your routine occasionally can make it more difficult for someone to target you. Don't keep everything in one place Spread valuables between different pockets or compartments in your bag. Avoid keeping phones, wallets or purses in back pockets where they can be easily accessed. Keep bags secure Ensure bags are closed and secure at all times. Carry them close to your body to reduce the risk of opportunistic theft. Secure loose valuables Consider using anti-theft purse or bag security cables where appropriate. These can make it more difficult for pickpockets to remove valuables without your knowledge. Protect yourself at cash machines Before using an ATM, take a moment to check your surroundings. Be wary of anyone standing unusually close and inspect the machine for signs that it may have been tampered with. Beware of distraction theft Thieves may attempt to observe your PIN or distract you while you are withdrawing cash. Always cover the keypad when entering your PIN and keep your card in sight at all times. If someone approaches or attempts to engage you unnecessarily, remain vigilant and focus on completing your transaction safely. Look after your bank card Put your card away immediately after use. Consider using a protective RFID card holder to help prevent unauthorised scanning of contactless cards.
We hope you find this information helpful. Kind regards, Crime Prevention Team
